Parkinson's Disease

Policing Parkers

Hello my name is Ileene,

I am new to this web site, so hopefully together we can live and learn from each other .

GDNF a drugs trial in Bristol.

Who am I ?

I am a female living in the North East of England, now aged 52 years old, married for 27 years to a lovely man with a handsome, son aged 13 years old.

What was I ?

Previously a Qualified Nurse and Detective Constable, 2 professions that I enjoyed for my individual achievements. I have now retired but Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease aged 38 yrs old on Valentines day 2002

How could I ?

Having caught the tale end of a radio program about a drug’s trial, I rang the hospital in Bristol where it was being tested on human Guinea pigs and offered them my body for medical science.

Probably best to offer yourself when alive, otherwise the benefit can not be monitored !

When could I ?

I managed to secure an appointment with the lead Neurologist, a lovely man who is so gentle and caring. I was assessed and told when I would be sent the itinerary to start.

Where would I ?

Where the operation would take place was crucial and since it was a 50 minute plane journey away from Newcastle International Airport, I had to ensure the flight was booked and everyone looked after while I was gone. The first 2 operation’s were at Frenchay Hospital Bristol, the 3rd was at the Brunel building Neurology at South mead Hospital Bristol.

I was only supposed to have one operation to have 4 cannula put into the area of the brain where the cells have died off, which is attached to a titanium screw / port. I think that’s when the saying “Screw Loose” becomes an acceptable comment.

Where else would I be able to have, such an opportunity, in this lifetime, to give me hope for a new lease of life without restrictions.
